The COVID19 pandemic is causing immense suffering across the globe. But there are surely few places harder hit than the world-famous “resort” island of Bali. Tourism normally accounts for around half of Bali’s entire economy and, more pertinently, fully 70% of the islands’ population of 4.4 million depend on it for their livelihood. But there hasn’t been a single tourist entry here since Indonesia closed its borders to foreigners in late March. Hotel occupancy is officially 0%.
